Say hello to the Year of the Dog!
For those who celebrated Lunar New Year 2018, I hope you had an amazing time with your family and friends. Being Vietnamese, Lunar New Year is an absolute huge thing for me. This was the 5th year I didn’t get to spend the most important Vietnamese holiday at home with the people I love due to school, so that was a bummer.
However, that did not stop me from cooking up an extravagant feast (mâm cỗ) for the holiday, which was one of the things I could do to create a festive atmosphere. Since I couldn’t gather all the ingredients for a proper feast, I did my best with the food. Get ready for some drooling because the feast I cooked was spectacular!
Traditional Vietnamese Square Rice Cake (bánh chưng) – made from glutinous rice, mung beans, pork and other ingredients.
Vietnamese Braised Pork with Eggs – made from pork belly, hard-boiled eggs, fish sauce, sugar for the caramel color (nước màu) and other ingredients.
Savory Sticky Rice (Xôi Mặn) – made from glutinous rice, chinese sausage, pork roll, dried shrimp, quail eggs and other ingredients.
Pork roll (giò lụa or chả lụa)
Spring Rolls (chả giò) – made from group pork, shrimp, crab meat, with shredded carrots, mung bean noodles, and other ingredients.
Pickled Small Leeks (củ kiệu)
As you can see, my feast is a combination of both Southern and Eastern traditional foods, since I, myself, am a combination of both regions as well. Some of these dishes, like pork roll, sticky rice cake and pickled small leaks, were obviously bought from a local Vietnamese super market. I cooked the rest all by myself. Needless to say, I was happy with the results. A few close friends came over to enjoy the feast and we had a blast.
